7 Tips To Protect Your Skin When Wearing A Face Mask
While 2020 has introduced a new fashion piece, the face mask, our skin may suffer because of it. While it’s important to keep everyone safe around us during the pandemic, our skin can experience dryness, friction, acne, and blemishes when wearing a face mask. However, with a little change in our skin care routines, we can rejuvenate or keep that skin glowing! Here are our seven tips to protect the skin while wearing a face mask.
1. Wash Your Face and Mask Often
We all love a great makeup day, but not enough to keep a full face of makeup on while we sleep. Just like our skin care routines help us clean and refresh our skin, having a routine of cleaning our face masks can also do wonders!
Throughout the day, we speak into our face masks, touch our face coverings, and get a little makeup on them as well. Putting them back on our faces without washing them can irritate our skin and cause some unwanted breakouts or blemishes. The CDC recommends we wash our face masks after each use either by hand or in the washing machine and then dry them either in the dryer or lay them out flat in the sun. In 2020, a clean face mask is an essential part of caring for our skin.
2. Moisturize

When wearing a mask, it’s extra important to make sure we moisturize our skin! Without it, our skin can feel extra dry from potential rubbing from our masks. A moisturizer creates a light barrier between us and our mask by helping our skin stay hydrated. After applying moisturizer, wait five minutes or so until the moisturizer has seeped into the skin. This will help you make sure your skin is absorbing all the product instead of the mask!

3. Easy on the Foundation
Sometimes the combination of a mask and makeup can also irritate the skin. When this occurs, going lighter on the foundation or eliminating it completely is the way to go. At times, our skin can benefit from a little break and even more so now that we’re wearing a mask every day. When you feel like your skin is getting a little irritated with that foundation, go easy or skip it completely so your skin can have a little breather!
4. Avoid Frequent Touching
This tip seems pretty obvious, especially to protect ourselves from Covid-19, however, it’s also a safe practice for taking care of our skin. When we wear a mask multiple times a day, there can be an impulse for constant touching to readjust, take off, and itch. We’re all guilty of it but we should strive to only touch the face when necessary! Our hands have a lot of dirt, oil, and bacteria on them. To stop from spreading all of that to our faces and preventing unnecessary clogged pores and breakouts, we need to be conscientious to not touch.
5. Carry Some Chapstick
Friction from a facemask can be irritating to the skin. Using chapstick can help as well as keep your lips feeling soft throughout the day. Check out two of our favorite lip balm products from Eminence Organic Skin Care. We love the Citrus Lip Balm and the Rosehip & Lemongrass Lip Balm with SPF 15.
6. Focus on Your Eyes
Wearing a mask can seem like the end of our makeup routines as we know it, but we’re here to tell all makeup lovers that this is simply not true! Yes, our makeup application will look a little different but that doesn’t mean we have to opt for zero makeup all the time. We suggest focusing on the upper half of the face like the eyes, brows, and upper cheekbones. Different ways you can make the upper portion of your face pop can include:
- Defining brows.
- Experimenting with eyeshadow.
- Getting glowy skin with highlight.
- Practicing your cat eye with some eyeliner.
- Finishing with some mascara for your eyelashes.

7. Stay Hydrated
Hydrating our skin is such an important part to keep it glowing and looking beautiful! When we don’t get enough water, our skin can experience dehydration and result in itchiness, dullness, darker under-eye circles, and an increased appearance of fine lines and surface wrinkles among other health issues. Water is so important for skin as well as the overall health of the body.
As we wear a mask, we can unintentionally create the habit of not drinking enough water. Let’s make sure to hydrate during the day and get the recommended 8 glasses of water into our diets. Doing so can help clear unwanted blemishes and keep the skin looking dewy!
