Top 5 Reasons to Consider Barbering School
Do you have an eye for design and a passion for making others look and feel their best? Do you prefer working one-on-one with clients? Are you looking to forge a career path that offers flexibility as well as unlimited potential? If so, have you ever considered going to barbering school?
Becoming a barber is a fantastic choice that can set you up for a long, successful career. There are tons of benefits to becoming a barber – but the first step is enrolling in and completing barbering school.
A barbering school program can teach you all of the essential skills for a career, including:
- Men’s hairstyling and cutting
- Beard design and grooming
- Facial, skin, and hair treatments
- Chemical relaxing, perming, and permanent waving
- Hair coloring
- Safe work practices
- Salesmanship and business
- Board rules, regulations, and statutes
Once you have met the barber school requirements and complete the number of training hours, you will have to take the state board exam for certification. Once you pass, you can start practicing in your state as a barber!
So, you may be asking yourself: “Is barbering school something I should consider?” If you are contemplating making this step, here are some more reasons to take the leap.
1. Enter a Growing, Reliable Job Industry
One of the greatest benefits of becoming a barber is that this skill is always in demand. People always need haircuts and the popular styles and designs are constantly changing – so there is always a need for talented barbers.
Additionally, the revenue for barbershops has continuously grown over the past ten years – so there is plenty of earning potential! Although there is no cap to how much you can earn as you take on more clients, the average barber earns over $38,000 a year.
Another great thing about enrolling in barbering school is that you can earn hands-on experience during your training. This means that you are qualified and prepared to start your career once you graduate and earn your certification.
2. You Can Finish Barber School in Less than a Year
Each state has specific requirements for the number of training hours students need to complete before they can take the exam. In Oklahoma, you must enroll in 1,500 hours of barbering school courses.
One of the most pressing questions you likely have is: how long is barber school? Well, the great news is that you can complete all of the training hours in less than a year if you are a full-time student.
At Broken Arrow Beauty College, we have flexible, optional learning schedules available. Full-time students are enrolled for 35 hours per week, which can be completed in a total of 48 weeks. Part-time students can complete the course in 74 weeks or 18 months by taking 22.5 hours of class per week.
Course hours for full-time students are from 8:30 am to 4 pm Mondays through Fridays. Part-time students end by 1 pm. These flexible hours mean that you can complete barbering school at a pace that works for you. If needed, you can still keep a full or part-time job while you complete these courses.
3. Create the Career You Want
Another great benefit to becoming a barber is that you can build the type of career path you want. Once you finish barber school and earn your certification, you can have the skills and know-how for many job opportunities.
Starting your career in a barbershop or salon as an employee is certainly not the only option. In fact, about 72% of all barbers are self-employed.
For example, you can open up your own practice and become a business owner by running your own shop. If you prefer to operate independently, you can rent a booth at an already established barbershop space. You can even offer haircuts from your own home or set up a mobile barbering business to meet clients!
If you find that you love the classroom environment of barbering school, you can also pursue teaching to train other future barbers. We offer a master instructor training course at Broken Arrow Beauty College for students who want to teach others!
4. Excel in a Career that Matches Your Personality
Being a barber is quite rewarding as it allows you to be social and interact with people one-on-one. This type of job is great for people who can strike up a conversation with just about anyone.
Being friendly and outgoing can help you go far in this career to build up a list of loyal clients. As a barber, you will likely forge long-lasting relationships. Many people are incredibly loyal to their barbers – many go to the same ones for years!
You can also flex your creativity and design skills in this career. While some of your clients may have specific requests for their haircuts, you can certainly meet some who enjoy experimenting with new styles. As a skilled barber, you can make other people feel good and look great with your creative designs!
Of course, these aren’t on the list of barber school requirements. But if you enjoy interacting with people, love creative environments, and making other people feel good, being a barber could be a perfect fit!
5. It’s More Affordable than You Think
Going to any type of school or training can be expensive. But barbering school is actually far more affordable than you may realize.
At Broken Arrow Beauty College, we don’t think the barber school cost should hold you back from pursuing your dreams! This is why we proudly offer financial aid to students who qualify. We have additional financial assistance programs, including the Pell Grant and AACS scholarships.
